iZone's Call for Proposals

July 29, 2019

Calling all artists!

You may have noticed that the walls in iZone are rather blank and are in need of a nice pop of color. We are seeking an artist who is willing to create a bright, exciting mural that begins to capture our fun and vibrant culture.

On any given day, our space is flooding with students, staff, and faculty. We want our users to feel inspired as they explore and tackle ideas that matter. Our hope is that this mural inspires our users to feel a sense of excitement to further influence creative problem solving, as well as provide a fabulous back drop for any social media platform!

The Project:

Barbara J. Burger iZone is a creative problem-solving space, program and community designed to empower students to explore and imagine ideas for social, cultural, community, and economic impact. This mural will serve to visually introduce iZone to visitors and capture the offbeat spirit of the space to further inspire students to be involved.

We are looking for a bright, exciting mural that upsets expectations about iZone. The mural should blend harmoniously within the space, but break away from traditional University of Rochester colors and design. It should include one of these phrases or a creative equivalent:

Creativity is messy.

Explore your wild ideas.

Chase your wild ideas.

Curiously creative.

The artist will design and implement the mural during the month of September based on their initial sketch. iZone staff will be available as a resource but will otherwise leave the final design up to the discretion of the artist.

Location:

iZone is located within Rochester’s Rush Rhees library. When in use, the site is well lit with fluorescent lights and also has several large windows. The wall is slightly curved with a maximum height of 5'9" and length of 21' 8'', and runs up the side of a one story staircase. This mural will face a high traffic public study space used primarily by students and for iZone events. The area is wheelchair accessible.

The artist will be able to access the site during any of its hours of operation, which are:

Sunday: 10am -3am

Monday: Thursday: 8am - 3am

Friday: 8am - midnight

Saturday: 10am - midnight

The artist will also be provided with personal access to a locked storage area in iZone for materials.

Payment & Budget:
The artist will be compensated $1,000 (negotiable) for the completed mural.
iZone will additionally cover reasonable material costs (paint, brushes, tape, tarps, etc.)

Artist Eligibility:

Open to any member of the Greater Rochester community. We encourage new artists as well as students from the surrounding area to apply.

Application Requirements:

7-15 digital images of past work. Please label with date of completion.

A rough sketch of the proposed mural.

A written statement introducing yourself, your interest in the project, your approach to the project and why your design represents iZone and its mission.
